It’s been a busy couple years in the Burton household to say the least. Two seasons ago, message boards were spawning an avalanche of hate on Jake Burton and Donna Carpenter’s brand, retailers were fed up and dropping lines, rumors were swirling about the company’s profitability, and news of layoffs were coming from its Burlington, Vermont headquarters. Last May, Burton Co-owners Jake and Donna decided to step back into the office in more permanent roles, CEO in Jake’s case and now president for Donna, to focus on the brand’s DNA—core retailers, employees, and the sport. The result has been a complete 180 in the industry—“Burton is back on track” is the new mantra amongst riders and retailers. But the year hasn’t been all powder, promotions, and parties. In September, we were shocked to learn that Jake has testicular cancer. While his prognosis looks great, there has been a lot to reflect on, and we had the chance to catch up with Burton in between board meetings, backcountry hikes, and chemo for his take on it all.
